Loblaw, Sobeys, Metro, Pattison, and Federated Co-operatives control Canadian grocery shelves. Here's what it would take to make Canadian sourcing the default.
- you haven't included Walmart in the list of grocery retailers. Should they be included?
- people with strong personal beliefs (e.g. religious, veganism), and/or legitimate health issues (e.g. allergies, celiac,) require certainty regarding the nature of their groceries. Is it halal, kosher, does it contain wheat, nuts, dairy, etc.? I think for the most part labellimg acommodates these issues. So why not the same level of certainty for country of origin? It is now a "strong personal belief" for a lot of Canadians.
