Pax Americana worked wonderfully for boardrooms and CEO's for decades, and Canada simped along because it was agreeable and facilitated our domestic apathy. The 'NEU' America has displayed itself with typical lack of tact or respect. It is in that light that it seems exceedingly logical to build Gripens here, and while dated, they are tough and proven, and can land and take off without an intervention, and a giant support system. And here's the wringer. Canada with established manufacturing and trained pilots to explore and test the Gripen, will be extremely well positioned to capitalize on next gen GCAP fighters. The environment is ripe for domestic autonomy. Let's get this one right. Go Canada. 🇨🇦

It was clear that Carney deliberately held off until after the CUSMA negotiations. In my opinion Europe and Canada are a far better aligned partnership but then I am hopelessly biased.
I expect that -as neighbours- Canada will always trade (albeit a lot less) with the US but this does not mean that right now I want to see Carney stick it to them.

However, a caveat: I am so furious about American sleaze and mendacity (I just belatedly watched Jamieson Greer being interviewed by Rosemary Barton) that I myself am having trouble making sense. Mark Carney is remaking Canada from the bottom up as the USA relationship is as it was no longer exists and will not return.. A limited number of F35 jets will enable Norad to continue as the USA needs Canada's participation. The Saab program fits neatly into Canada's homegrown industrial airspace development so I agree there's no strategic value in waiting.
The second issue is that Saab uses American engines so watch Trump do everything he can to sabotage that.
In the long run the purchase will go ahead but in the short term it will be very bumpy
